A gang broke into an ATM of a public sector bank near the Narayanpur crossing in Rajarhat and made off with Rs 5 lakh early on Wednesday, police said.
“The burglars first broke a camera outside the kiosk and then sprayed black paint on the CCTV camera inside. They then used a gas cutter to cut a part of the machine and access the vault where the cash is kept,” an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.
Like many ATMs in the city, this was unguarded, too.
The ATM is located in a bustling neighbourhood, around 5km from City Centre 2, but the area becomes deserted by 10pm.
An officer of Narayanpur police station said the men had come in a four-wheeler. No one was arrested till late on Wednesday.
