Pillion rider run over in Calcutta

According to witnesses, the bus driver pressed the brakes but before it could come to a halt, the man came under the wheels

A 57-year-old man riding pillion on a motorbike died after he fell and a bus ran over him at the crossing of the Tollygunge tram depot and Deshapran Sashmal Road on Wednesday morning.

Joydip Chakraborty, a resident of Parui Kachcha Road in Sarsuna, was declared dead at Baghajatin State General Hospital.

A police officer said CCTV footage from the spot showed how the bike jumped a little before the pillion rider lost balance and fell to his left.

“According to witnesses, the bus driver pressed the brakes. But before it could come to a halt, the man came under the wheels,” the officer said.

Debojyoti Dutta was arrested after he allegedly failed to explain why he was carrying Rs 45.57 lakh when he was intercepted in Bowbazar on Wednesday.

The police have alerted the income tax department. The accused is from Agarpara.
