Teachers of Jadavpur University have suggested that Class X board results be considered with Plus II board results for undergraduate admissions, a university official said.

The teachers came up with the suggestion after the university asked them how students should be admitted to humanities and science streams since tests have been ruled out because of the pandemic.

Admitting students based on marks is the sole option as tests —pen-and-paper or online — cannot be held because of safety reasons not to speak of Net connectivity problems faced by many students, the official said. “In this context, we sought the opinion of teachers.”

Some of the suggestions, particularly in the science subjects, say marks scored in the subject in the Class X board exams be taken into account along with Plus II board results, the official said.

In 2018, the university and teachers were at loggerheads over the scrapping of admission tests in humanities.

This time the university sought their opinion and teachers have welcomed the move.

Students did not need to write some papers in the Plus II board exams and got marks based on their past performance in those papers. So, the suggestion to consider Class X board results, along with the Plus II board results, a teacher said.

The ICSE council could not hold the geography exam in Plus II because of the lockdown, the teacher said.

The CBSE board, too, could not hold the geography exam. The state HS council, too, could not hold the geography exam.

The ICSE council and the CBSE board have awarded marks in the paper by factoring in a student’s previous best marks and internal assessment. The HS council gave marks in geography based on a student’s previous best marks.

“How can we admit a student to geography honours knowing he/she has not been assessed. So, it is advisable that his/her score in the subject in the Class-X board exams be considered. This will give us some idea about his/her merit,” the teacher said.

Partha Pratim Roy, a physics teacher, said the situation was similar in case of physics and chemistry.

The HS council could not hold the physics and chemistry exams because of the lockdown.

“How can students be admitted on the basis of scores for which he/she has not been assessed,” Roy said.

Both the ICSE council and the CBSE board had held physics, chemistry, and math exams before the lockdown.

“It will not be advisable to admit students based on their Plus II board results. We might take into account their Class X board results,” a teacher said.

Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, the university pro-vice-chancellor, said: “We are likely to hold a meeting of the admission committee next week to decide on the admission modalities.”
