Jadavpur University will consider science subject scores in Madhyamik for admission to undergraduate science courses. The university decided on the mechanism because of the Covid impact on the Higher Secondary exams.

But this is applicable to only state board students.

The Higher Secondary council failed to conduct the physics and chemistry exams because of the pandemic; so, the marks of mathematics and physical science in Madhyamik will be factored in, a member of the admission committee in science said.

The committee met on Saturday to finalise the undergraduate admission process.

While the chemistry department will consider the marks of life science in Madhyamik, the geography department will consider the geography scores.

This year, the admission process will be different for state board students and those from the ICSE and CBSE, a university official said.

As the CBSE board and the ICSE council held physics, chemistry and math exams, only the Plus II board exam scores will be considered for admission to undergraduate science courses.

The score of physical science in Madhyamik and mathematics in Higher Secondary will be considered for physics course, another member of the admission committee said.

The weightage of both physical science and mathematics will be doubled and the list will be based on how much a student scores out of 400.

For admission to mathematics, the student’s score in physical science and mathematics in Madhyamik and in mathematics in Higher Secondary will be considered.

The weightage of mathematics in HS will be doubled and the list prepared, assessing how much a student has scored out of 400.

For admission to geography, the score of mathematics in HS will be doubled and the scores of mathematics and geography in Madhyamik will be factored in.

“The mechanism accepted at the meeting will help the departments ascertain if a student has command over the subject,” Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, pro-vice-chancellor, said.
