The Bengal higher secondary council will give 40 per cent weightage to a student’s performance in the Class X board exams and 60 per cent to Class XI annual exam marks.

The combined weightage will be added to 30-mark practical (for lab-based subjects) or 20-mark project (for non-lab subjects) and this will be considered the “principal basis of evaluation (mool sutra)” to arrive at the final marks of a higher secondary 2021 candidate.

While factoring in the secondary exam marks, a student’s performance in the best four subjects (carrying 400 marks) will be considered.

Marks in the individual subjects will be considered while calculating the weightage of the Class XI annual exam.

“Then the combined weightage will be added to scores in practical or project papers,” said a council official.

HS 2021 had to be scrapped because of a surge in Covid cases.

“The council will try to publish the results within July,” said Mahua Das, the president of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education.

In HS, theory papers carry 70 marks in lab-based subjects and 80 marks in non-lab-based subjects.

In a statement uploaded on its website on Friday evening, the council explained how the principal basis would be put to use to arrive at the final marks.

According to the formula, 28 per cent of the marks in a science paper and 32 per cent in other subjects will be based on the best of 4 percentages in the candidate’s secondary level marks.

The council has said 42 per cent of the HS 2021 marks in a science subject and 48 per cent in others will be based on marks obtained in that subject in the Class XI annual exams.

“If a student has scored 50 out of 70 in physics, then we will work out what will be his or her score out of 42. Following application of a mathematical equation (42X50/70), the weightage from Class XI will stand at 32,” the release explains.

The addition of the weighted secondary marks and Class XI marks will make 70 per cent of the Class XII marks in a subject.

“This will be added to the practical score of 30 (in case of science) to arrive at the final score of a higher secondary 2021 candidate,” says the release.

Council president Das said she had requested the heads of the institutions to submit the Class XI annual exam marks by June 23.

“I have also requested the presidents of the secondary board and other equivalent boards to submit details of Class X board exam performance in 2019 at the ear-liest so that we could publish the results at the earliest,” said Das.

Saugata Basu, the secretary of the Government School Teachers’ Association, said: “The syllabus of Class XI and XII are independent of each other. Besides, last year some of the exams in Class XI could not be held with the onset of the pandemic. How the marks of those papers in which a student has not written any exam will be factored in remains a question.”

Madhyamik results

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education will prepare the secondary mark sheet this year awarding equal weightage to a candidate’s performance in Class IX an-nual exams and internal formative assessments of Class X.

“The results will be published in July,” said board president Kalyanmoy Ganguly.
