A postgraduate trainee attached to the fever clinic of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital died after falling from the roof of the emergency building on Friday morning.
Police said the 28-year-old woman, a second-year student of pediatrics at the medical college, was a resident of Maniktala, in north Calcutta. No suicide note was found, an officer said.
The young doctor, who sources said was under medication for psychiatric conditions, had moved from Vishakhapatnam to Calcutta after bagging a postgraduate seat in pediatrics at RG Kar.
“Primarily, we have learnt that the doctor had jumped from the roof of the nine-storey emergency building of the medical college and hospital,” said a police officer. “The postgraduate trainee was attached to the fever clinic of the hospital, where patients with Covid-19 symptoms are screened and then sent for swab tests.”
Eyewitnesses have told the police that they had heard a loud thud near the emergency building around 11am.
Doctors, nurses and other employees of the hospital rushed to the spot and saw the postgraduate intern lying on the ground, bleeding.
She was rushed to the emergency department, where she was declared dead.
