Passport applicants have been advised to download and install the Aarogya Setu app on their phones before reaching the Passport Seva Kendra for interviews.
The advisory has left applicants in a fix. What happens if one doesn’t have a smartphone, a few asked. What if an applicant doesn’t want to install the app over security issues.
The PSK in Kasba resumed operations on Friday after two months and people started logging into the passport portal to book online applications. But the advisory greeted them, asking them to download the app, wear masks, carry sanitisers, and follow distancing rules while visiting the PSK for interviews.
The Centre launched the app as a Covid-19 tracker but many have questioned its security aspects.
Several applicants whose interviews were postponed because of the lockdown expressed concern over the advisory.
“My phone memory is full. My wife and daughter have their interviews scheduled for next week… they have downloaded the app. We both have to accompany our daughter as she is a minor,” a Tollygunge resident whose online applications were rescheduled twice because of the lockdown said. “I am still not sure if they will stop me from entering because I don’t have the app.”
Regional passport officer Bibhuti Bhushan Kumar said: “We will consider such cases (those without the app) separately. But we request all applicants to try to follow the advisory.”
Applicants will have to open the app while entering the PSK and show officials the page that says “You are safe”.
At least 650 online application slots will be opened at the Calcutta PSK in Kasba from Monday. “Only normal applications are being entertained now. Tatkaal or applications for police clearance certificate will start soon,” regional passport officer Kumar said.
