Calcutta University has announced that colleges must receive applications online for admission to first-year classes from August 10 and the merit list will have to be published by August 28.

The university issued a notice on Friday announcing the admission schedule, but did not say when the classes would start. The notice says: “Total admission process must be completed through online mode and no physical presence of the students is required at the colleges.”

Admission portal

The colleges will open the admission portal on August 10, after uploading the eligibility criteria on their websites. “Now that the plus-II results of all boards have been announced, the colleges can fix the criteria,” an official said.

Application format

The colleges will upload the online application format
on August 10. Students will apply according to the eligibility criteria and enter marks, like the best-four score, in the format. Scanned marksheets will have to be attached to the format.

Eligibility criteria

All candidates who have passed plus-II board exams are eligible to apply, provided they have also passed in English (the full marks in the English paper must not be less than 100). Students will be admitted subject to fulfilment of conditions laid down in the university’s notification dated May 7, 2018, for BA and BSc (honours/general). For admission to BCom, the colleges have been asked to refer to the notification published on May 30, 2018.

BA/BSc: Candidates for honours courses must have obtained at least 50% marks in aggregate and 45% in the respective subjects or related subjects at the previous qualifying examination. Aggregate marks will be calculated by adding the marks in the top four subjects. Marks in compulsory environmental education/studies will not be taken into account.

Merit list

The list has to be published by August 28. A member of the CU undergraduate council said the colleges must keep updating the prospective candidates about the date of publication of the merit list on its website. “They can send alerts through SMS or email,” he said.

Admissions will start on September 1. The colleges will have to update the prospective students about the admission roster by posting updates on the website or sending alerts over the phone.

Guidelines

Candidates will have to be given details of the banks where they will pay the fees. The list of eligible candidates will have to be handed over to the designated bank branches.

“Candidates must not visit a college to make the payment... We have devised the system in a way that students will not have to come in contact with others during the admission process,” he said.

Admission closes

September 25 is the last date of admission. Documents will be verified when classes will start. Admissions will be cancelled if the documents and the declarations in the online application do not match.

“We will update the students about commencement of classes once the situation normalises,” said vice-chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee said.
