L.N. Meena, the Bidhannagar police commissioner, was transferred to the CID on Friday.
He will take over as inspector-general, CID, and Mukesh, the deputy inspector-general (Murshidabad range), will take over as the commissioner of Bidhannagar.
Mukesh, a 2006 batch IPS officer, has served as superintendent of police in Bankura, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts.
The same notification also announced the transfer of Ranendra Nath Banerjee, joint commissioner of police (headquarters) in the Bidhannagar commissionerate.
As both Banerjee and Mukesh are from the same batch, technically an officer junior to Mukesh should replace Banerjee, some officers said.
Home department officials at Nabanna said it this was a “routine transfer” but some senior officers said it was “not usual” to transfer a top cop from Calcutta’s twin city in the middle of the pandemic.
“It is very unusual. The new commissioner will naturally take a few days to settle down,” an officer said.
The Bidhannagar commissionerate, contiguous with Calcutta, comprises Salt Lake and New Town.
Several pockets in the commissionerate area were declared as containment zones where lockdown has been reinforced from Thursday.
A senior officer termed the transfer “sudden”.
Pedestrian hurt
A pedestrian was injured after a portion of a balcony on the third floor of a six-storey building on KK Tagore Street in Jorabagan collapsed on Thursday afternoon, police said. Mohammad Subhan, 33, was treated at RG Kar hospital.
