A 78-year-old man from Middleton Row and a 13-year-old girl from Ballygunge have tested positive for dengue and are admitted to different hospitals in the city.

Public health experts warned that intermittent spells of rain would create the perfect conditions for mosquitoes to breed. The dengue virus is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

The elderly is being treated at Belle Vue Clinic. An official of the hospital said his condition was stable.

The teenager is undergoing treatment at the Institute of Child Health. A doctor said fluid had accumulated in her chest and abdomen when she was admitted on Wednesday. “Her platelet count had dropped to 12,000. We put her in ICU. Her condition is stable now,” said the doctor.

A Calcutta Municipal Corporation official said they were conducting dengue awareness campaigns. “This time the campaign acquires a special significance because people, with their attention focussed on Covid, should not be lax in guarding themselves against dengue,” said the official.
