Eleven people tested positive for the coronavirus in Calcutta and its surroundings between Monday night and Tuesday evening, the highest single-day count in the city so far.

Out of the 11 new patients, a woman from Howrah and a man admitted to NRS Hospital died on Tuesday. The nine others are at different hospitals.

A 52-year-old resident of Southern Avenue, a 51-year-old businessman from Salt Lake’s AD block, a 57-year owner of a fast food shop in Belghoria, a Midnapore resident admitted to the infectious diseases hospital in Beleghata, three family members of an anaesthetist at an army hospital, a patient at ILS Hospital, Howrah, and an Egra resident have tested positive.

The Egra resident was a contact of the man from Nayabad, who had attended a wedding there, and is now on ventilator support at a Bypass hospital.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Bengal has reached 33.

The Salt Lake resident tested positive for coronavirus late on Monday, sources in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation said.

The first Covid-19 patient from Salt Lake was admitted to a hospital in the township on March 29 after he complained of breathlessness, a corporation official said. His family members have told civic body officials that he had not travelled overseas.

“We are drawing up a list of people he might have come in contact with,” said Anindya Chatterjee, the councillor of ward 41. The man owns a factory in Howrah’s Sankrail, an official of the civic body’s health department said.

“He has not been put on ventilator. The doctors are treating him according to protocol,” the hospital official said. He is diabetic and has a history of hypertension, a hospital official said.

The man’s 23-year-old son, driver and the family’s 24x7 help have been sent to the quarantine unit in New Town. His daughter, who suffers from breathing trouble, and his wife are in home quarantine.

His brother’s family members, who stay on another floor of the building, have been asked to remain in isolation at home. Two part-time help from Duttabad have been asked not to step out of their homes.

The 57-year-old from Belghoria had kept his fast food shop open for a few hours every day during the lockdown, said officials of Kamarhati Municipality. The civic body is trying to identify those who he had come in touch with.

The 52-year-old resident of a neighbourhood off Southern Avenue works for an NGO. A family member said he had no history of travelling abroad or to any other state recently. He is on ventilator support.

The man’s wife works at a multinational company’s office in Taratala but has not been to office for the past 10-12 days, said a family member.
