Calcutta High Court on Monday asked the state government to file an affidavit by May 2 stating details about the progress in the probe into the murder of Anupam Dutta, the Trinamul Congress councillor from Panihati municipality in North 24-Parganas.

He had been gunned down on March 13.

The division bench headed by Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava issued the order following a petition by one of Dutta's relatives who sought a CBI probe into the murder case.

Suvendu summoned

The metropolitan magistrate court in Calcutta issued an order on Monday asking the state Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari to appear before the court on May 20.

The order followed a defamatory petition by Trinamul Congress general secretary Abhisekh Banerjee alleging that Suvendu had tarnished his image by deåivering derogatory statements in public.

Anis Khan progress report

The state-appointed special investigating team, which is probing into the alleged mysterious death of student leader Anis Khan at Amta in Howrah, could not present its report before the court on Monday as Justice Rajasekhar Mantha could not attend the court during the day.

Anis' father Salem Khan, however, said that he would seek a CBI probe into his son's death as he had no faith in the SIT.
