Calcutta High Court relief for ISF MLA’s ‘friend’

Justice Rajasekhar Mantha of Calcutta High Court on Friday issued an interim order restraining police from coercive steps against Shaikh Shamsur Alam, known to be arrested ISF MLA Nawsad Siddique’s friend.

Siddique and 19 ISF supporters were arrested for their alleged role in a violent protest in Calcutta on January 21.

The judge asked Alam to appear virtually before New Market police.

Alam’s petition before the high court accused Calcutta police of harassing him for knowing Siddique. It said the police asked him to appear before them.

“My client’s residence was raided by city police. The police are harassing him...,” Alam’s counsel Bikash Bhattacharya said, adding Alamfeared arrest and sought proceedings drawn against him be quashed. Bhattacharya said Alam had no role in the January 21 incident.

The advocate-general opposed the plea. The judge issued the interim order and fixed the matter for hearing after two weeks.

Narcotics seizure

Siliguri: The special task force of Bengal police seized narcotics and stimulant tablets worth around Rs 35 lakh from the outskirts of Siliguri on Thursday. Three persons, all residents of Manipur, have been arrested.
