Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the Union government to provide security to Bhangar's ISF MLA Nawsad Siddique.
The MLA had approached the court with a plea for its intervention for his safety.
"I had told the state government that I was feeling insecure and sought protection.... Then, I went to the Union government with the same appeal. But none of them heeded my plea. I had no choice but to appeal to the court to ensure my safety and I am happy that the court granted my appeal," Siddique said.
The MLA's counsel Firdous Shamim submitted before the bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha that his client feared that there was a threat to his life, given the volatile situation in his Assembly constituency.
"So many MLAs have been getting security. My client Nawsad Siddiqui should also get security as he represents an area like Bhangar," Shamim argued in the court.
The counsel also said Siddique did not have faith in the state police and wanted security from central forces.
Responding to the appeal, Justice Mantha said that given the present situation, the lawmaker should be given central security. He ordered the Centre to provide security to Nawsad at the earliest and asked them to file a report by Monday.
“I did not even have the minimum security cover received by an MLA. I had gone to Nabanna demanding the security of the people of Bhangar. I had also written to the governor. If required I will move the court in the future to ensure the security of Bhangar’s people,” Siddique said.
On Tuesday, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha also instructed the director general (police) to ask his department to find out what actually happened when former deputy chief of Haatpukuria gram panchayat in Canning in South 24 Parganas, Sirajul Islam, had gone to file nominations as an Independent candidate for the ensuing rural polls.
