Justice Bibek Chaudhuri of Calcutta High Court on Wednesday issued an interim stay on the FIR lodged by state police at Bishnupur police station in South 24-Parganas against CBI officers for allegedly harassing common people in the name of probe into coal smuggling and other cases.

Following the order, state police won’t be able to take any further step in the FIR that names accused CBI officers, including Umesh Kumar who is leading the probe in the coal smuggling case in Bengal.

The FIR was filed at the Bishnupur police station under Diamond Harbour sub-division of South 24-Parganas.

Justice Chaudhuri announced that the case would be heard in detail after six weeks.

A resident of Diamond Harbour had filed a complaint at Bishnupur police station alleging that he, along with some other people, were threatened by CBI officers in the name of interrogation in connection with the coal and cattle smuggling cases.

The complainant also alleged that CBI officers had been putting pressure on them to give statements according to their instructions.

After the complaints, state police lodged an FIR against the CBI investigators.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had also alleged that in the name of probe, CBI officers had been harassing common people.

She alleged that an autorickshaw driver was also interrogated in connection with the case being probed by the CBI.
