Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the state government to take immediate decisive action to stop the post-poll violence and advised the director general of police to take cognisance of complaints sent over emails to the police stations concerned.
A vacation division bench comprising Justice Kaushik Chanda and Justice Apurba Sinha directed the police to take action to "end violence".
The court also stated that both the police and central forces would work jointly to address such complaints.
Justice Chanda said: "The court cannot sit idle after hearing the nature of torture. It (violence) must be stopped immediately."
In the directive, the court asked the government to ensure the safety and security of the people.
The directives came following a PIL by an organisation of lawyers in which it accused the state police of inaction despite receiving a large number of complaints of post-poll violence. The organisation also claimed that 11 persons died in such incidents, but didn't furnish any proof.
Taking cognisance of incidents, the court advised victims to submit their complaints to the director general of police through email.
