Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the administration to appoint an officer not below the rank of DSP to conduct a probe into the death of BJP worker Bola Nath Mondal after he had suffered an injury in a clash between Trinamul Congress and BJP supporters outside a counting station at Bishnupur in South 24-Parganas on July 11.

Mondal succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on July 11.

Justice Jay Sengupta issued the order on a petition moved on behalf of the BJP's Bishnupur unit which accused police of cremating Nath's body without conducting post-mortem.

"The allegation is serious in nature. There should be a thorough probe into the allegation," Justice Sengupta said while asking the investigator to submit its report to the court on August 18.

The court also asked the investigators to seize video footage of cameras installed inside and outside the counting station and at the hospital.

The footage will have to be submitted to the court on the date of the next hearing of the case on August 18.
