Justice Biswajit Basu of Calcutta High Court on Thursday issued a directive asking the state education department to upload on a website the educational qualifications of those teaching in state-aided schools.
“The guardians of the students of state-aided schools should be aware of the
educational qualifications of the teachers,” Justice Basu said while passing the order.
The judge was hearing a case about alleged irregularities in the appointment of
a teacher in Murshidabad district.
Animesh Tewari, the headmaster of a school in Murshidabad, allegedly appointed his son Ashish Tewari through illegal means.
The court has already terminated the appointment.
“The parents are entitled to know the academic qualifications of those teaching their sons and daughters in school. We have received allegations that many of the teachers don’t have the requisite academic qualifications. Still, they are teaching. Therefore the state government has to upload the qualifications within two weeks,” Justice Basu said during the hearing.
Allegations of irregularities in the appointment of teachers have been many in the past few years.
Justice Basu on Thursday also constituted a three-member expert committee consisting of the commissioner of school education, president of the state secondary education board and chairman of the school service commission to oversee the uploading of the teacher data on the portal.
