Calcutta High Court on Thursday allowed the BJP to continue its agitation at Dorina crossing and the Y-channel in the Dharmatala area until September 16.

Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj had earlier allowed the BJP to hold the agitation by occupying a 15-metre stretch of the road at Dorina crossing from August 29 to September 5. But on Thursday, the party moved a plea seeking the court’s permission to extend its programme till September 16.

The BJP has been holding the dharna demanding justice for the family of the junior doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta on August 9.

The BJP’s petition said approximately 1,000 workers would attend the dharna from 10am to 9pm every day.

Opposing the BJP’s prayer, advocate general Kishore Datta said: “Any dharna at the centre of the city creates massive traffic jams. The party should not be allowed to continue its programme at the same place.”

He said anybody could hold any agitation by not disturbing the traffic.

But Justice Bharadwaj said he did not find any reason for traffic problems because of the dharna on one side of Dorina Crossing or the Y- Channel and allowed the BJP’s prayer.
