A Calcutta High Court division bench headed by Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava on Wednesday concluded hearing of the appeal filed by Birbhum Trinamul chief Anubrata Mondal seeking quashing of the order by Justice Rajasekhar Mantha who had rejected Mondal’s plea for a stay on a CBI directive for interrogation in a cattle-smuggling case.

The bench on Wednesday adjourned its verdict. Till it comes, Mondal does not need to appear for the interrogation.

Mondal’s lawyer, Vivek Tankha, the former Madhya Pradesh advocate-general, said his client was ill and his request for interrogation at his Bolpur home was turned down. Appearing for the Union government, additional solicitor general K.V. Raju said Mondal claimed to be ill, but documents placed before the court show he is “quite okay”, attending party events. After the hearing, the court adjourned its verdict.

High court Justice Subhasish Dasgupta stayed proceedings of a defamation case filed at Diamond Harbour court by Trinamul general-secretary Abhishek Banerjee against BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari for his alleged derogatory remarks.

A decision will be made after the high court disposes of a prayer by Suvendu. Suvendu had moved high court seeking quashing of the proceedings against him. The high court is yet to hear details of the case.
