The high court on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to BJP leader Mukul Roy in connection with a clash between police and BJP supporters at Coke Oven in Durgapur on November 1 last year.
A division bench of Justice Sahidullah Munshi and Justice Subhasish Dasgupta granted Roy anticipatory bail on a condition that he would have to surrender before any lower court in Durgapur and obtain bail within three weeks.
The Coke Oven police had lodged a suo motu case against 39 BJP activists and leaders, including the party’s state chief Dilip Ghosh and Roy. Later, a lower court in Durgapur issued arrest orders against the accused. Ghosh and many other accused had already obtained anticipatory bail.
In another case, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha of the high court issued a 12-week stay on the proceedings against Roy on the basis of complaints lodged by the district magistrate and deputy superintendent of police of Purulia.
The two officials had alleged that Roy had made some derogatory statements against them at a public meeting in Balarampur on November 2 last year.
