Calcutta Club has asked its members and guests who “have returned from abroad in the past 14 days” to refrain from visiting the club premises as part of its measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
In a communiqué to its members on Tuesday, the club said it would constantly monitor the situation but all events and functions would stand cancelled till April 1.
“The central and state governments have spelt out a series of precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Social distancing is one of the most crucial measures,” club president Subrata Kumar Basu told Metro. “We have requested all club members to cooperate with us keeping in mind the gravity of the situation and the threat that looms.”
The club has postponed all bar nights on Fridays. Sources said among some of the events that stood cancelled were a tasting session of single malts, the annual intra-club golf tournament and a bridge tournament. The club is yet to decide when these activities would be rescheduled.
“A series of events, including Bengali drama, dance and song recitals are scheduled for April. The foundation day programme is slated for April 15. We will review the situation and decide about these events,” a club official said.
The swimming pool and the gym, too, have been shut down until further notice.
A committee member of Calcutta Club said: “The staff of the club has been made aware about how the coronavirus spreads. Everyone has been reminded about their personal hygiene and the dos and don’ts.”
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had on Monday urged clubs to impose restrictions on large gatherings.
Several clubs, including CC&FC and Dalhousie Institute, have cancelled their house activities and shut down their gym and pool. Some clubs are restricting the number of guests a member can sign in.
The guest count has anyway come down because no one wants to take chances.
