A gang of goons tried to deface the busts of eminent personalities and freedom fighters at a locality in Siliguri on Tuesday night, the second time since August 25.

The incident, which occurred at Ramkrishna Colony in ward 47 of the city, led to repercussions across the civic area.

Busts of 10 eminent persons, namely Master Da Surya Sen, BR Ambedkar, Khudiram Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, poet Bhanu Bhakta Acharya, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Panchanan Burma, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Mahatma Gandhi are installed at Ramkrishna Colony.

“Last night (Tuesday), some criminals tried to deface the busts of these eminent persons. They pelted bricks and stones at the busts. We condemn the act and want the police to find out who all were involved in it,” said Amar Ananda Das, the local councillor.

On Wednesday, Siliguri mayor Gautam Deb visited the spot. He termed the incident shocking and said they would install CCTVs near all the statues and busts across the city to prevent such undesirable attacks.

“The Siliguri Municipal Corporation has filed a complaint with the Siliguri Metropolitan Police. We will request senior police officers to take stern steps against criminals who tried to deface the busts,” said Deb.

Councillor Das said that the busts had not been damaged significantly in Tuesday's attack. However, there were visible marks or dents made by the bricks and stones as well as some scratches on the busts.

“We will clean the busts and carry out necessary patchwork,” he added.
