A 49-year-old motorcyclist, Arindam Koley, died after a private bus hit him at the Chowringhee Road-Lindsay Street crossing in the Esplanade area on Friday afternoon.

A resident of Adan in Hooghly’s Chanditala, Koley was wearing a helmet. He received multiple injuries following the accident, police said.

The accident occurred around 2.10pm when the private bus, details of which are not yet known, was trying to move past Koley and fled the spot after hitting him from behind, officers added.

“We are trying to identify the offending vehicle from the CCTV footage that is available to us. The driver sped off after realising he had hit a two-wheeler,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.

“We rushed him to SSKM Hospital where doctors declared him dead.”

Friday’s was the fourth fatal accident in the city in the last 24 hours.

Three persons died in two crashes involving two-wheelers early on Thursday. One of the crashes took place on Hazra Road and claimed two lives while the other happened on St George’s Gate Road at Hastings where one man died.

Senior officers said the Lindsay Street-Chowringhee Road intersection has remained one of the accident-prone spots with pedestrian crossovers and a heavy traffic flow.

“Vehicles coming down from the Park Street flyover tend to speed past and cross the traffic signal at the Chowringhee Road-SN Banerjee Road crossing as early as possible. Similarly, those headed towards the flyover or Park Street want to rush past the signal at the Lindsay crossing,” said a police officer. “This often leads to accidents.”

Officers said measures like placing moveable barriers to prevent indiscriminate crossovers and regulate traffic flow have been taken. Traffic sergeants also are posted at the crossing to reduce the number of accidents.
