Bus accident toll rises to seven, other injured passengers still under treatment

One more passenger of the private Sikkim-bound bus that on Saturday veered off the NH10 and plunged into a gorge near the Teesta river at Andheri in Kalimpong on Saturday died on Sunday.

With his death, the toll has risen to seven.

Sources in the Kalimpong district administration said Jamiruddin Ansari, who was from Kishanganj of Bihar, died of critical injuries at the STNM Hospital in Sikkim on Sunday morning.

Also, the body of the unidentified person at the accident site on Saturday has been identified as Sujit Das of Jalpaiguri.

Altogether, there were 23 persons in the bus.

Among the 16 injured, two were discharged after being administered with first aid.

The remaining 14 injured, including the driver and helper of the bus, are currently under treatment at the hospitals in Gangtok and Singtam in Sikkim.

Administrative officials said they are providing all necessary support to the families of the deceased and the injured according, to the instructions of Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and chief secretary Manoj Pant.

“The bodies of six persons have been sent to their respective locations. We are waiting for the relatives of Indrajit Singh (one of those who died on Saturday) to come from Meghalaya,” said a source in the administration.

Balasubramanian T., the district magistrate of Kalimpong, said every Bengal-based family which lost a member in the accident would receive compensation of 2 lakh from the state government.

“For the victims of other states, we have shared the official report with the governments concerned for appropriate steps from their side,” the district magistrate added.

On Sunday, Balasubramanian, along with officials of the transport department and others, reached Andheri, the accident site on NH10, around 38km from Kalimpong district headquarters.

“I visited the site with the police and regional transport office officials for an assessment of additional requirements. A team of RTO, the state PWD and others will inspect the spot on Monday and also identify other vulnerable stretches," he said.

Balasubramanian added: "We will take necessary steps to avert such accidents in the future."
