Two groups of men fought and at least one round of bullet was fired over an alleged dispute over control of pockets of Chowbaga, adjoining EM Bypass, on Tuesday afternoon.

Sources said the fight was between two factions of Trinamul — one comprising supporters of a state minister and the other of a councillor.

The police said 11 people had been arrested from the spot on charges of rioting, causing grievous hurt, criminal intimidation, mischief and common intention.

The fight broke out at F21, West Chowbaga in Gulshan Colony, not far from Trinamul Bhavan near Topsia.

Sources said the area was witnessing a real-estate boom and had a thriving business of illegal construction.

Officers of Anandapur police station said the scuffle started around 2.40pm when men under the leadership of Zulkarnain Ali picked a fight with Sheikh Mohan and his associates.

People in the locality said they heard one round of firing.

“But luckily no one was injured. We had rushed to the spot and arrested 11 people. Some of them managed to flee,” said a senior officer of Anandapur police station.

Local Trinamul leaders said a state minister’s son, who is a councillor himself, had instigated the violence. “Thugs sent by the ward 66 councillor tried to take control of the locality on Tuesday afternoon but residents beat them back. He had sent about 100 goons. More than 500 people resisted the goons,” said a Trinamul leader, who requested anonymity.

The accused, the minister’s son, told Metro: “I am not involved in this. There is a real estate developer who is engaged in a lot of illegal activities. I had personally gone to the deputy commissioner of police to report against his activities as my father got a lot of complaints from residents against him.”

“He is behind all the trouble. He is giving an impression that I had sent people to create trouble. This is an utter lie,” he said.

The other councillor refuted claims against him and blamed the other side for the violence.
