The BSF seized gold bars worth Rs 27.86 lakh and arrested the alleged carrier near Hili in South Dinajpur district on Thursday.
The 61st battalion of the BSF intercepted a 24-year-old after receiving a tip-off and frisked him. The BSF personnel seized four gold bars, which altogether weighed 466.020 grams, from his possession.
“The cost of the bars, which were wrapped with black carbon tapes, is Rs 27.86 lakh. The arrested youth was Paritosh Sarkar, a resident of Purba Aptiyar under the jurisdiction of Hili police station,” said a source.
“During interrogation, Sarkar revealed that he had received the bars from a resident of Haripukhur of the district and was supposed to deliver the consignment to another person. He used to act as a carrier and had delivered illegal consignments ofgold earlier also,” added the source.
Later, Sarkar was handed over to officials of Customs in Hili.
Bangladeshi nabbed
Troops of the same battalion posted in the North Agra border outpost in South Dinajpur apprehended Md Arman Hussain, a 19-year-old youth from Chandpur district of Bangladesh from an unfenced stretch of the border on Thursday.
He was trying to infiltrate into India.
Some Indian and Bangladeshi currencies have been recovered from him. He has been handed over to the police.
Narcotics seized
A CID team arrested two narcotic smugglers in Malda on Thursday night and recovered around 900 grams of brown sugar (a derivative of heroin) from them.
The duo, identified as Israq Ahmed and Ektarul Sheikh, were picked up from a hideout that is under the Kaliachak police station area.
While Ahmed is a resident of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, Sheikh is from Narayanpur village of Kaliachak.
The team also seized a nine mm pistol from them.
The narcotics, which have been seized from them, cost around Rs 1 crore rupees, police sources said.
