Siliguri: The Border Security Force (BSF) posted at the India-Bangladesh border in South Dinajpur nabbed two Bangladeshi smugglers from different locations on Saturday.
At around 10.25pm, troops of the 91st battalion of the force posted at Elendry border outpost intercepted a smuggler named Bablu Rahaman, a resident of Dinajpur district, near the border fence while he was trying to smuggle some contraband items from India to Bangladesh.
Altogether, 635 bottles of cough syrup, some beer bottles and a cellphone were recovered from him. Later, he was handed over to Kumarganj police station.
In another incident, the special searching party of the 164th battalion of the BSF posted at Parilahat border outpost in the same district apprehended Mohammad Ehsan, who is from Naogaon district of the neighbouring country, from Laskarhat village. Ehsan was involved in breaching the border fence a day before, BSF sources said.
Some cough syrup bottles and Indian and Bangladeshi currencies were recovered from him. He was later handed over to Tapan police station.
The BSF working under the north Bengal frontier also conducted anti-smuggling drives from July 18 to July 21 in different locations and recovered a number of contraband items such as cattle and cough syrup bottles.
The cost of the seized items, which were supposed to be smuggled to Bangladesh, is ₹4.03 lakh, sources said.
