A BSF jawan drowned in the Ichhamati near Taki in North 24-Parganas on Friday morning when he fell from a boat and got entangled in a rope that was being used to pull out a broken anchor from the riverbed.
BSF officers said Malda resident and constable attached to Battalion-85 Nasiruddin Ahmad, who was on the deck of a boat, fell in the water because of a sudden tidal wave that pushed the vessel ahead.
Other crew members dived into the river to rescue him. But Nasiruddin failed to come up as he got entangled in the rope.
BSF South Bengal Frontier DIG Amerish Arya said: “Despite the best efforts by fellow crew members, the constable could not be taken out immediately.....”
BSF sources said a few days ago, an anchor of a floating border outpost (a vessel) had got broken. On Friday morning, jawans were trying to tug it out of the riverbed using rope and chains.
