A constable of the Border Security Force (BSF) posted at the India-Bangladesh border in South Dinajpur committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver early on Monday morning.
Police recovered the body of Subhash Chand, 41, from near the fence and started a probe. BSF authorities are also conducting an inquiry into the incident.
Sources said that Chand, from Uttam Nagar in Delhi, was transferred to South Dinajpur recently. He joined his posting last week and was posted at the 61st battalion of the force at Kumargram border outpost of the district.
On Monday morning, the BSF personnel heard a gunshot and launched a search.
They soon found his body near the fence with a bullet injury in his head. Police were informed. A team from Patiram police station reached and recovered the body.
Bangla duo nabbed
Troops of 72nd battalion of the BSF posted at Khurka border outpost in North Dinajpur district apprehended two Bangladeshis on Sunday with 50 bottles of cough syrup.
Salauddin and Torikul Alam Babu of Thakurgaon district of the neighbouring country were nabbed while illegally trying to cross the border with the cough syrup. Both were handed over to Karandighi police station.
Brown sugar
The special task force (STF) of state police seized 500 grams of brown sugar — a derivative of heroin — worth Rs 50 lakh late on Sunday from an SUV on Old Malda Station Road. It was smuggled from Dimapur in the SUV. Three persons, including the driver, were arrested. The trio are from Shahabajpur under Kaliachak police station.
