The subsidence in Bowbazar, triggered by East-West Metro work, and displacement of hundreds of people have not come in the way of organising the 58-year-old Durga puja in the neighbourhood.

A large banner at the entrance to Syakrapara Lane was put up on Sunday afternoon announcing the puja, which is organised by Madhya Kolikata Syakrapara Lane Yubak Samiti.

The banner has a picture of the deity and images of rubble of the collapsed houses.

The puja, which has a budget of Rs 3 lakh this year, used to be held in Syakrapara Lane, one of the affected stretches that is out of bounds to residents.

So, the organisers are looking for an alternative location nearby.

“We had thought that we wouldn’t be able to organise the puja. But so many residents called me up and said they wanted the puja to be held,” said Ashis Sen, the secretary of the organising committee.

Sen has been staying at a hotel with his wife, mother and daughter for a fortnight. His daughter will appear in Madhyamik next year.

Dipankar Nandi, another resident of Syakrapara Lane, said he would do his best to ensure the puja is held.

Usually, a core group of 10 or 12 people shoulder the bulk of the responsibilities. This time, however, many more have come forward.

Promises of help from various quarters have further emboldened the confidence of the organisers.

“The organisers of Durga pujas at College Square and Santosh Mitra Square have promised all kinds of help to us, including monetary help,” said an organiser.
