Troops of the 93rd battalion of the BSF posted at Bangladesh border in Jalpaiguri district acted on a tip-off and recovered cannabis from a car on Wednesday.
Habibul Alam of Kuripara village of the district, the sole occupant in the car, was nabbed in this connection.
Sources said around 2pm on Wednesday, the troops posted at Chanakya border tried to intercept a car moving in the border area. As the car didn’t stop at a barrier gate, the BSF personnel chased and finally apprehended it.
As they searched the car, they found 660 grams of cannabis inside. A phone and Indian currency were recovered from Alam.
Later, Alam was handed over to Kotwali police with the cannabis and the car.
The BSF also held anti-smuggling drives from May 6 to 9 across locations and seized contraband like cattle and cough syrup bottles supposed to be smuggled to Bangladesh. The cost of the seized items is Rs 5.41 lakh, sources said.
