Narendra Singh, a 33-year-old jawan of the Border Security Force (BSF) is suspected to have committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle on Wednesday.
He was posted at the Jalghar border outpost at the India-Bangladesh border in South Dinajpur.
Sources said Singh, a resident of Kilpur in Uttar Pradesh, was posted in the 164th battalion of the central security force. He was posted in Raiganj and a couple of weeks back, he was posted at the border outpost.
His wife and their two children stay in Raiganj.
Yesterday, while he was on duty, he shot himself in the chin with his service rifle. Some locals spotted his body lying near the border road and informed other BSF personnel.
They reached the spot and Singh was rushed to the Balurghat district hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
As the news spread, a police team reached the hospital and initiated a probe. Later, his body was sent to the Malda Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
Police officials suspect that he might have resorted to such an act out of mental stress. “We are waiting for post-mortem reports. Our officers are gathering information about the incident,” said Bikram Prasad, the deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) of South Dinajpur.
