A resident of South Dinajpur district, suspected to be a cattle smuggler, was injured when on-duty BSF personnel allegedly fired at him at the India-Bangladesh border on Sunday night.

Sources said some people were allegedly trying to smuggle cattle into Bangladesh through the border at Gayeshpur under Hilli police station when a BSF team spotted them. Asked to stop, the group reportedly attacked the team with iron rods, sticks and bricks, and the BSF opened fire.

Ananda Das, 30, of Jayantipur village of Hilli, suffered a bullet injury in his right leg while others fled.

The BSF took him to the super-specialty hospital in Balurghat.

In the same district, the BSF on Sunday in separate incidents nabbed two alleged Indian smugglers, Subhankar Mondal and Gaffar Sarkar, with cough syrup bottles, Bangladeshi currency and other items. The duo, BSF sources said, reside in villages near the border. The BSF handed the duo and the seized items over to police.
