Sources said a group led by Sukhu Sheikh and Sultan Sheikh, who had hosted the event without permission from the police, clashed with another group led by Akkas Sheikh and Ataur Sheikh.

According to locals, both the factions lobbed over 50 crude bombs at each other.

“During the clash, Ataur Sheikh got injured as a bomb exploded near him. Also, he was hacked with a sickle. Ataur was rushed to Malda Medical College & Hospital where he is still under treatment,” said a source.

Soon, a police team reached the spot and dispersed the crowd. They also conducted raids and have detained six persons for being involved in the incident.

In another incident, a team of Chanchal police station of the district seized an improvised firearm and one round of live cartridge from a youth in the Krishnapur area on Tuesday morning.

Police sources said two youths — both migrant workers — had planned to commit robbery in some adjoining area. While one of the youths fled during the raid, Merazul Haque, the other migrant worker, was arrested and the firearm and bullets were seized from his possession.
