Bombs hit home, farmer and kin hurt

Attack took place hours after Helaluddin Sheikh, raised protests when group of drunken youths used abusive language in their chat on road

Six persons were seriously injured when goons hurled crude bombs at the residence of a farmer near Raghunathganj in Murshidabad district on Tuesday night.

The attack took place hours after Helaluddin Sheikh, 58, raised protests when a group of drunken youths used abusive language in their chat on a road at Lakshmijola village.

"Shortly before midnight, the same group is suspected to have returned to the spot to hurl at least a dozen crude bombs at Helaluddin’s home. Helaluddin, his two daughters, younger brother and sister-in-law suffered injuries,” said a Raghunathganj police officer.

A civic volunteer, Minarul Haque, 30, who lives nearHelaluddin’s home, was injured as he was struck by a shrapnel when he stepped out on hearing the commotion.

Helaluddin, his daughters Mahmuda, 23, and Rumali,20, younger brother Kamaldar Sheikh, 44, sister-in- lawTanuja, 39, and Minarul were admitted to Jangipur subdivisional hospital. Tanuja was later shifted to Murshidabad Medical College as her condition deteriorated.

A police team has been posted outside Helaluddin’shome. Helaluddin registered a complaint with Raghunathganj police later on Wednesday, following which two persons — Saidur Rahman andHukumuddin Sheikh — were arrested.

District police superintendent Bholanath Pandey said the incident was being probed to find out the reason for the attack.
