A clash with bombs and bullets rocked a residential neighbourhood in Kasba, not far from Acropolis Mall, on Sunday night.
Several people, including a homemaker, were injured. Four persons have been arrested and one minor has been detained in connection with the violence.
People in the neighbourhood said the violence was the outcome of a clash between supporters of two Trinamul Congress councillors in the locality.
Metro visited the spot on Monday and found signs of a rampage at Indupark, near Rajdanga.
Two-wheelers were found lying on the road with their headlights smashed and at least one bullet hole was found on the iron gate of the Rajdanga Drainage Pumping Station.
This newspaper tried to talk to several people. None spoke.
Ruma Samaddar, the homemaker who was one of the injured and based on whose complaint the police have drawn up a case, accused the councillor of their ward, Lipika Manna, of being behind the attack.
“The councillor’s men attacked us,” Samaddar said at her residence on P Majumdar Road.
Manna, the councillor of Ward 107 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, said a “landlord-tenant” problem had been blown out of proportion and given a “political colour”.
“The woman who was injured is the tenant. The family has a difference of opinion on politics with a son of the landlord. The tenant is not vacating the house. That is why false allegations have been levelled. This is unnecessarily being given a political colour now,” Manna said.
She said some unknown men fired and hurdled bombs on Sunday night in her ward, following which a group of her supporters took to the roads to protect the locality.
“But unfortunately the police have arrested some of these men (her supporters),” Manna said.
Some people in the locality, dotted with single-storey homes and slum dwellings, expressed support for their previous councillor, Susanta Ghosh.
Ghosh now represents Ward 108.
Ghosh told this newspaper none of his men was involved in the attack on Sunday night.
The police said they received information about the clashes and on reaching the spot, they saw 20 to 30 men who had fired two or three rounds.
“There was an attempt to murder... to terrorise common citizens. A case has been registered under sections of rioting, attempt to murder, causing grievous injury with dangerous weapons and sections of the arms act,” said an officer of Kasba police station.
The police said Dinu Yadav has been identified as the prime accused based on Samaddar’s complaint.
The police identified the four arrested accused as Raju Sardar, 27, Supradip Dey, 20, Kalu Ray, 31, and Rabin Dey, 44. The fifth is a minor who has been detained.
“Remains of crude bombs and two empty cartridges were seized from the spot,” said the officer.
