The toll in the Bogtui carnage case rose to 10 after another woman, who sustained burn injuries on the night of March 21, died at Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital early on Sunday.

Atahara Biwi, 50, was among the four injured in Bogtui when several houses were set on fire on March 21 night in the Birbhum district’s hamlet.

Atahara was the sisterinlaw of Mihilal Sheikh who lost his wife and eightyearold daughter in the carnage.

“With Atahara Biwi’s death, the toll has risen to 10. Eight of the dead are women... The other two deceased were a child and a 25-year-old man,” said a police source.

The Bogtui arson on March 21 night was apparently in retaliation to the murder of Trinamul deputy chief of Barshal gram panchayat Bhadu Sheikh the same evening.

Police had recovered seven charred bodies of a family from a single house on March 22 morning that led Opposi¬tion parties to raise questions about Bengal’s law and order under Trinamul rule. Later, two more persons succumbed to their burns. Atahara Biwi who died on Sunday is the 10th.

The CBI is probing both the cases of the Bhadu murder and carnage under Calcutta High Court orders. A group of CBI officials on Sunday morning reached the staterun medical college and supervised the autopsy.

“The statement of Atahara Biwi was recorded earlier,” said a CBI source.

Atahara had suffered around 30 per cent burns.

“We thought that she would survive and her injuries were about to be healed. But her condition worsened in the first week of April and was again hospitalised,” said Mihilal.

A source at Rampurhat medical college and hospital said that her kidney and stomach were affected and she died of cardiac arrest owing to high blood pressure.
