CBI sleuths on Sunday summoned the income tax consultant of slain Trinamul leader Bhadu Sheikh, whose March 21 murder allegedly triggered the Bogtui carnage the same night, in a bid to zero in on his assets as part of the central agency’s ongoing probe.

The tax consultant, Sk. Kalimuddin, said the sleuths on Sunday collected from him copies of income tax returns of Bhadu for seven consecutive years up to the 2020-21 fiscal.

The CBI also took copies of profit-and-loss sheets of the businesses that the slain Trinamul leader used to run. Bhadu used to deal in steel bars, sand and stone chips.

Kalimuddin has been asked to visit the CBI’s camp office on Monday as well with income tax returns of Bhadu’s wife Tabila Biwi and the GST returns of businesses owned by Bhadu.

“The CBI officials summoned me to their camp office and took details of his income tax returns for the past seven financial years (on Sunday). I have been asked to visit the office on Monday with I-T papers related to his wife and GST files of Bhadu Sheikh,” said Kalimduddin, adding that there was no anomalies in his assets and income.

Sources said Bhadu’s annual turnover in 2014-15 was around Rs 23 lakh and had risen to Rs 1.5 crore in 2020-21.

CBI sources said they wanted to zero in on the assets and income of Bhadu and his wife to match their existing properties.

Various witnesses, including family members of the victims, had told the CBI about Bhadu’s illegal trade and extortion from sand and stone mines.

A few family members of the victims had earlier openly named senior Trinamul leaders, including arrested block president Anarul Hossain, of getting a share of Bhadu’s money.

Sources said Bhadu’s wife Tabila had also shared similar information with the CBI sleuths.

CBI digging up Bhadu’s assets has sent alarm bells ringing among a section of Trinamul leaders in Birbhum district.

“Many Trinamul leaders had a good rapport with Bhadu and got a share of his spoils. These leaders are certainly worried with the CBI probing into Bhadu’s income,” said a Trinamul source.

No district-level or local Trinamul leader commented on the CBI’s decision to zero in on Bhadu’s assets.

Earlier the CBI recovered at least two diaries from the house of Bhadu that reportedly had several names to whom payments used to be made from his account.

Toto driver Riton Sheikh, who was earlier arrested by the CBI, claimed at Rampurhat court on Sunday that he had been assigned by one Dollar Sheikh to carry petrol to Bogtui village on the night of the carnage on his vehicle.

“Dollar had asked me to carry petrol in the village. I don’t know anything else,” said Riton .

The court had remanded him in 14 days judicial custody.

CBI officials on Sunday summoned five firefighters from Rampurhat fire station who went to extinguish the arson at Bogtui village on March 21 night. Sources said the CBI had found some negligence in part of the firefighters and they were summoned to clear doubts of the sleuths.
