Justice Jay Sengupta of Calcutta High Court on Friday observed that the probe into the mysterious death of Bara Lalon Sheikh, who was the prime accused in the March 21 Bogtui carnage, should be conducted in a better way and directed DIG CID to monitor the investigation.
Lalon died in CBI custody earlier this month and the CID has been entrusted with the probe into his death. The probe was initiated on the basis of a complaint filed against CBI officers by Lalon’s wife Reshma Biwi.
Justice Sengupta passed the order following a CBI petition that claimed an improper probe was being conducted by the CID. The CBI also said the CID were yet to record the statement of Lalon’s widow Reshma.
The CBI counsel claimed that Lalon had committed suicide but the CID had been trying to implicate CBI officers in the case claiming it to be a case of murder.
“Reshma Bibi had called up a CBI officer on his phone. From where did she get the phone number of the CBI officer? The court should ask Reshma Biwi who wrote her FIR,” the CBI counsel told the court.
Justice Sengupta called Reshma and asked her who had helped her in writing the FIR.
Reshma re plied that she had recognised the people. The judge then asked who had provided her with the contact number of the CBI officer. Reshma told the judge that the CBI officer had given her his phone number.
The lawyer appearing for the state claimed since Reshma was not in the right mental condition, CID investigators did not register her statement.
The Bogtui carnage had triggered a flurry of visits by opposition leaders to the Birbhum village.
