Bodies of 3 quarry cave-in victims arrive

An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh was handed over to each of the bereaved families by the local administration on behalf of the state government

Bodies of three of the five killed in a Mizoram stone quarry cave-in on Monday afternoon reached their homes in Nadia’s Tehatta and Chapra as well as in Sandeshkhali of North 24-Parganas on Wednesday evening.

Bodies of the other two victims, both from Tehatta, are expected to arrive at Dum Dum airport late on Wednesday night and would reach their villages early on Thursday.

On the direction of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, minister Ujjwal Biswas and Sandeshkhali’s MLA Sukumar Mahato received bodies of Rakesh Biswas, Madan Das and Subrata Raftan at the Dumdum airport on Wednesday afternoon.

An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh was handed over to each of the bereaved families by the local administration on behalf of the state government. Prime minister Narendra Modi has also announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the stone quarry collapse.

Five labourers from Bengal were killed in a massive cave-in at a stone quarry inMaudarh village of south Mizoram’s Hnathial district, located around 160 km from the capital town of Aizwal. The incident claimed the lives of 12 labourers, including five from Bengal, three from Assam and two each from Mizoram and Jharkhand.

The incident occurred when at least 13 labourers were working on a road construction project in the area.

Speaking to reporters in Jhargram on Wednesday, Mamata termed the incident as unfortunate and assured her government’s support for the bereaved families.

“We have the policy to offer jobs,” she told reporters while expressing condolence for those lost their lives while working for the country.

Earlier in the day, Mamata instructed Krishnagar MP Mahua Moitra to rush to Tehatta to monitor necessary arrangements for the last rites of those killed.

In Sandeshkhali, senior Trinamul leader Seikh Sahajan, along with officials of the local administration, reached victim Subrata Raftan’s home.
