Bimal Gurung’s Gorkha Janmukti Morcha will hold a three-day dharna in Delhi from Friday to press the BJP-led Centre to fulfill its promises for the Darjeeling region during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament.

The BJP had promised a “permanent political solution” and tribal status to 11 Gorkha communities.

The urgency shown by Gurung’s party, which severed ties with the BJP in 2020, comes with a realisation that the five-year tenure of the present government at the Centre will end in less than a year.

“Through this dharna, we want to send a message to the Centre to fulfill our demands. There is hardly much time left for the present government’s tenure to come to an end,” said Gurung, who is currently in Delhi.

Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held next year. Apart from this ongoing monsoon session, only a winter session is left this year.

The three-day dharna will be held by the women’s wing of the party. “This event was planned months back to coincide with the monsoon session of Parliament,” said Gurung.

The monsoon session, which started on July 20, is expected to be held till August 11.

Gurung has hinted that the party would wait till “August 15” for an announcement for the region.

“We will then think of a new strategy (if there is no announcement),” said Gurung.

However, apart from Gurung, there is a general sense of urgency among the BJP’s hill allies as well.

“It will be difficult for the BJP if it does not come up with something concrete before the general elections. It will be difficult for us, too, to face the people.” said a leader of a party aligned with the BJP who did not want to be named.

Neeraj Zimba, the Darjeeling BJP MLA and secretary-general of the GNLF, too, is currently in Delhi.

On Martyrs’ Day, which is celebrated in the hills on July 27 every year, the BJP MLA had warned the BJP.

“This is a warning to the government of India, from a BJP MLA to the BJP, that enough is enough. We have not elected you for roads. I have not held your flag in place of the green flag (the GNLF’s flag) for raids and Jai Shri Ram. Our freedom lies in land, our demand is for land,” Zimba had then said.

The Darjeeling BJP MLA, however, had added that he was sensing that “something good” was being cooked for Darjeeling and the “smell” of it was good.

The three-day dharna by Bimal Gurung’s party in Delhi called on Friday comes immediately after the apolitical organisation, Gorkhaland Activist Samuha, had organised a similar protest in Delhi last week.
