A group of BJP workers protested in front of the party's Salt Lake office here on Tuesday demanding the removal of a newly appointed district president.

The agitators also clashed with the security personnel and blocked the way of state BJP chief spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya when he tried to enter the office.

According to sources, similar protests are imminent in multiple districts where the party presidents were recently replaced.

Trouble began after Nabendusundar Naskar was appointed the district head of BJP's Mathurapur organisational district on August 5. According to agitators, Naskar contested the July 8 rural polls as an Independent against the party's official candidate.

They claimed that Naskar should have been penalised by the party's disciplinary committee but was being promoted.

Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar said the agitators' claims were wrong. "He (Naskar) did not contest the panchayat polls," he said.

"I know who is leading this agitation. That person has recently joined the BJP from the Congress. He is not aware of the culture and tradition of the BJP and that is why he is doing this. He will fall in line when he learns about the BJP's culture," Majumdar added.

An effigy of Naskar was burnt in front of the party office. Agitators allegedly attacked the office with sticks and a glass window pane suffered damage.

When spokesperson Bhattacharya reached the office to address a news conference, he was stopped by the protestors who fell at his feet demanding Naskar's removal.

Later, Bhattacharya said that Naskar and the BJP's official candidate had both filed nominations initially. Later the symbol was allotted to the other candidate and Naskar did not participate in the polls.

"What happened in front of the office was uncalled for," he said.

A BJP office-bearer, however, cautioned that this could be just the beginning.

"Wait and watch how protests erupt in other districts as well. Do not think the followers of other outgoing district presidents will stay silent," he said.
