Trinamul Congress supporters allegedly vandalised a BJP office, ransacked leaders’ vehicles, hurled stones and roughed up rival activists at Gayeshpur near Kalyani in Nadia on Tuesday evening.
According to sources, about 300 Trinamul activists gheraoed BJP’s Bongaon organisational district committee president Rampada Das’s car outside the party office and began ransacking it. The car was hit by stones but Das managed to take shelter inside the party office. The Trinamul supporters allegedly entered the party office and ransacked it and roughed up party workers, including several women.
Bongaon BJP MP Shantanu Thakur , who was present in Kalyani town in connection with a meeting, condemned the attack. “People will give a befitting reply to the Trinamul in the civic polls in Gayeshpur,” the MP said.
Later, BJP supporters staged a demonstration in front of Kalyani police station condemning the attack and police inaction.
Das and some other party leaders havelater met the officerincharge of Kalyani police station and lodged a police complaint over the alleged attack.
Speaking to reporters, Das said: “It was a planned attack to create panic among our party workers ahead of the civic polls. The results of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and last year’s Assembly elections in Gayeshpur town had made them afraid of losing power in the civic body. So, they attacked our meeting where only 30 people were present.”
Trinamul’s Gayeshpur town committee president Kaushik Ghosh termed the incident as “spontaneous outburst” of local people against the BJP leadership for patronising criminals.
“In the past, at least two of our party workers had been killed by criminals close to the BJP. This had angered local people who vented their ire on the BJP leader,” Ghosh said while refuting the allegations.
