The Bengal unit of the BJP has decided to hem in the ruling Trinamul Congress over the alleged rape and murder of a PG trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital by continuing its fight both on the streets and in the court.

“The issue has already gained traction at the national level, putting the TMC under visible pressure since the incident occurred. We have decided to launch two major protests in the next seven days, in addition to our legal fight demanding a CBI probe,” said a senior BJP leader in Calcutta.

According to the leader, the party is preparing to organise a large protest march in the city, which will start from RG Kar. Additionally, they plan to gherao Swasthya Bhavan, the state health headquarters.

“We will announce the dates of our two major protests in the city soon. This is an unprecedented incident involving a woman on the campus of a premier medical college in the city,” he added.

Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, filed a public interest litigation on Monday at the Calcutta High Court, demanding a CBI probe into the RG Kar incident. A source mentioned that three more such PILs have been filed in connection with the case.

On Monday, Agnimitra Paul, a BJP state general secretary, urged Mamata Banerjee to inform the CBI of the state’s decision to hand over the case to the central agency. “I urge Mamata Banerjee to write to the CBI, seeking a probe into the RG Kar incident,” said Paul.

However, Mamata Banerjee, who had earlier stated she had no objection to a central agency investigation, announced on Monday that she would hand over the case to the CBI if the state police failed to solve it within seven days.

The CPM has been protesting the “heinous incident” since it took place on Friday morning. On Monday, its youth wing DYFI and student wing SFI staged a protest in front of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, demanding justice for the victim.

Unlike the BJP and CPM, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra did not launch a direct attack on the Mamata Banerjee government.

On Monday, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took to social media, urging the state government to take immediate action to ensure justice for the RG Kar victim’s family.

“The incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is heartbreaking. Safety of women at the workplace is a big
issue in the country and concrete efforts are needed for this,” she wrote on her social media handle.

“I appeal to the state government to take immediate and strict action in this case and ensure justice to the victim’s family and fellow doctors,” she added.
