The Bengal BJP leadership has asked the party’s functionaries across the state to suspend all regular political activities for the first fortnight of the New Year and involve themselves in Ghar Ghar Yatra — the massive door-to-door outreach programme to let people know about the Narendra Modi government’s role in building the Ram temple at Ayodhya.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Ram temple on January 22.

“The leaders across Bengal have been asked to suspend all regular political activities from January 1 to 15 when their only job will be to reach the doorstep of every sanatani (Hindu) household to inform people about the role of the BJP government in setting up the Ram temple. No single house will be left out,” said a senior BJP leader.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is scheduled to reach Calcutta on Saturday to attend a slew of organisational meetings and visit a few prominent personalities of Bengal.

A source said RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale would be in Durgapur to hold meetings with organisational leaders of south Bengal on Saturday. Bhagwat will be in the state till Sunday evening.

Although a source in the RSS claimed the visits were part of the regular activities of the organisation, the presence of two prominent RSS leaders in Bengal ahead of Lok Sabha polls and the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya assumed significance.

A source said the BJP and the entire saffron ecosystem would plunge into the extensive campaign over the temple inauguration from January 1. Members of organisations like the RSS and the VHP will visit every household with invitation cards for the temple’s inauguration.

At a meeting with the BJP’s social media and IT cell members in Calcutta this week, Union home minister Amit Shah asked them to expedite the campaign for the inauguration of the Ram temple.

“The BJP leaders will join the programme without any political banner or party flag. The programme is named Ghar Ghar Yatra (a march to every household),” said a source adding that the party leaders had the liberty to campaign separately for the inauguration of the Ram temple.

A BJP leader said the party would continue its effort to apprise people of the struggle of years and the success of the Modi government in setting up the temple as part of its election campaign.

“The BJP leaders will certainly visit the doorstep of people in Bengal to let the new generation know about the struggles of people behind setting up the Ram temple and how it was finally set up during the Narendra Modi regime,” said BJP’s chief spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya.

A source in the BJP said in a meeting chaired by the party’s state president Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday, the rank and file was informed no one would get a leave from activities till the completion of the Lok Sabha polls and asked to concentrate on the Ram temple only till January 15.

"We have asked them to complete all organisational meetings, protests or regular political activities before December 31. There will be no such activities during the first 15 days of the new year as we will have to go to the doorstep of every household during that period," said a BJP leader in East Burdwan.
