Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused the saffron regime of orchestrating the CBI's moves to hound her nephew and party leader Abhishek Banerjee, and vowed to complete Trinamul’s ongoing outreach on his behalf if the BJP tried to stop it by misusing the central agency.

“If they (the BJP) think of stopping Nabo Jowar by detaining Abhishek, you should know that Mamata Banerjee will conduct all remaining meetings. I am not afraid of you (the saffron regime). Abhishek will probably join the meetings shortly. In case he fails... I will go to the districts and complete his endeavour,” said the Trinamul chief while virtually addressing a rally in Bankura’s Patrasayar, filling in for Abhishek, who left the district for Calcutta after receiving the CBI notice to appear for Saturday's interrogation.

Mamata, who showed up hurriedly to address the rally virtually from her Kalighat residence in the evening, said the CBI’s notice was part of the BJP agenda to harass her party, her family and Abhishek as he posed a political threat to the saffron ecosystem. She said the CBI summoned Abhishek despite his innocence.

The CBI summoned Abhishek in connection with the school recruitment “scam”.

Mamata said she would turn the Nabo Jowar (new high tide) into a Nabo Plabon (new flood) as the BJP was trying to stop the outreach.

"They are afraid of Abhishek.... The ED and the CBI are afraid of Trinamul. They (central agencies) are after my party, my family. But I am not ready to bow before them...,” she said.

“I am not afraid… we are not afraid. The fight that we have started will continue till the ouster of the BJP from the helm of power in Delhi…. I vow to oust the BJP from our beloved country, politically,” she added.

Mamata, who lavished praise on Abhishek, said he got priority in the Trinamul scheme of things as a leader, not her nephew.

“Many think Abhishek gets priority as he is my relative. But it is not true. Any blood relation cannot make a leader. We are the Trinamul family and the people of Bengal are our relatives,” she said.

Abhishek, before leaving Bankura, said he would resume the outreach on Monday.

“I challenge the CBI, show your power by arresting me if you can. They tried to trap me in scams like Saradha, Narada, coal-pilferage or cattle-rustling, but could not find anything against me. They did not even spare my family, my wife, my lawyer and private secretary. They simply could not find anything,” he said.

He said he would gladly be hanged if the CBI found anything against him in the recruitment "scam".

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said Abhishek did not need to be hanged, but simply cooperate with the CBI.

BJP state unit chief Sukanta Majumdar said after Abhishek, his aunt would also have to face central agency grilling.
