The Binay Tamang camp of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha organised marches at four major towns in the hills on Friday against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens as the party prepared to intensify the agitation.

Morcha supporters brought out processions in Darjeeling, Kalimpong , Kurseong and Mirik. The Darjeeling march started from Batasia Loop and ended at Chowk Bazar where a public meeting was held after the 4km walk.

Binay Tamang led the march in Darjeeling, while Morcha general secretary Anit Thapa was present in Kurseong. Tamang didn’t address the rally but disclosed the party’s strategy to the media on the sidelines of the meeting.

“The turnout at the meeting indicates that common people of the hills are against the CAA and the NRC exercise,” said Tamang.

He said the youth wing of the Morcha would start the next round of protest after Christmas. The Tamang faction had already announced gherao of central government offices across the hills from December 24 to 27.

The Morcha leader said he would visit the Dooars on December 22 and meet party leaders there. “I will look at the party’s organisation set-up in the Dooars,” he added.

Observers said Tamang’s discussion in the Dooars were likely to be centred around the CAA and the NRC issues.

The Morcha leader also said he was mobilising teachers and headmasters of primary and secondary schools to hold awareness camps across the hills.

“Since the schools are closed for winter vacations, members of primary, secondary and headmaster’s association started holding awareness camps on the CAA and NRC issues. A few days back, such a camp was conducted by the teachers at Peshok-Takling (in the Darjeeling subdivision,” said Tamang.

Apart from the protest meetings and the awareness camps in the hills, Tamang said he was preparing the ground to fight in the Supreme Court for Gorkhas whose names had been left out of the NRC in Assam.

“We are in touch with three Supreme Court lawyers, one of whom is Sanjay Hedge. He is already involved in the NRC cases in the Supreme Court. We plan to approach the Supreme Court,” he said.

The Morcha leader said he had “collected 14 different types of cases related to Gorkhas in Assam so far” and the lawyers were studying them.
