Congratulatory billboards put up by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation will welcome Nobel laureate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee to the city on Tuesday evening.

“The exact locations of the billboards or the number have not been decided yet, but a few of them would be on Banerjee route from the airport to home,” a corporation official said on Sunday.

Banerjee’s mother Nirmala lives in Saptaparni on Ballygunge Circular Road.

Police would inform the civic body on Monday about Banerjee’s likely route so that the location of the billboards can be decided.

It was not clear whether billboards would be put up on VIP Road as it falls under the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. The Salt Lake civic body has not received any instruction to prepare billboards an official said.

The billboards would be put up from Tuesday morning. Several LED display boards would also feature the congratulatory message.

A LED display board at Chandni Chowk that the civic body manages was showing a congratulatory message on Saturday evening.

“Bangla e swagata Nobel joyee Abhijit Bandopadhyay ke. Bangla apnake niye gorbito (Welcome to Bengal, Nobel laureate Abhijit Bandopadhyay. Bengal is proud of you),” the message read.

But civic officials said there would be some changes in the text. “We are expecting a final approval from the authorities on Monday. After that we would send the matter for printing,” a corporation official said.

Banerjee’s alma mater, South Point, has already put up two hoardings in Ballygunge, congratulating him.

“The hoardings went up on Friday. We have also collected signatures of close to 13,000 students and staff members. An appointment has been sought from Banerjee through his brother who is also a Pointer,” said Krishna Damani, South Point Education Society trustee. The artwork would be in the school colours of blue and gold.
