It is not clear to the police yet whether Gayen went and rammed into the divider
on his own or if the bike was hit by or brushed by another vehicle.

The resident of Shahid Smriti Colony in Panchasayar was with his friends who were returning from an eatery off EM Bypass near Patuli and were travelling in the direction of Ruby General Hospital around 1.50am.

Gayen rammed into the divider on the flyover across the Baghajatin railway line.

He was flung off the two-wheeler and landed on the road. His friend, who was riding pillion, has been critically injured.

Both were taken to a private hospital along EM Bypass where Gayen succumbed to his injuries.

Officers of Garia traffic guard who were the first responders and had removed the boys to the hospital said Gayen was “bleeding and unconscious” when he was removed to the hospital.

Metro visited Gayen’s home at Panchasayar but his family refused to speak.

“Please go away. Please do not disturb us,” said a woman who did not identify herself.

The fatal squad of Kolkata Police’s traffic department has taken over the investigation into the case.

“There are no CCTV cameras on the Baghajatin flyover and hence we have not yet been able to ascertain if the bike rammed into the divider by itself or was hit by some other vehicle. We are trying to ascertain the exact sequence of the crash,” said an officer of the fatal squad of the traffic police.

Last Sunday, another young motorcyclist named Akash Makhal died in a crash on EM Bypass on the Patuli-bound flank early in the morning. The police said he was not wearing a helmet.

“In both cases, both were riding a two-wheeler and both were speeding. Control over speed can avert accidents and consequent injuries or fatalities,” said a senior officer of the traffic police.
